What is CARB Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check, initiated by the California Air Resource Board, requires all heavy-duty trucks traveling within California to undergo periodic electronic emissions checks. This is regardless of origin and is open to both state and outside of state vehicles traveling in California roads.
Clean Truck Check is a program that works to lower emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks with gross vehicle weight ratings above 14,000. The HD I/M Program specifically targets such trucks that emit high levels of emissions such as motorhomes.
All American Diesel & Fleet Services can perform the check for you. To learn more, contact us.

Technology for HDI/M: Onboard Diagnostics
The CARB-approved OBD systems can collect vehicle emissions and transmit them to technicians via special equipment. HD I/M technicians must perform the testing, and then submit the results to CARB. All American Diesel & Fleet Services provides heavy-duty OBD inspections and maintenance to help you meet compliance deadlines.
Dates for Compliance
January 2025
Starting Jan. 1, 2025, all non-exempted vehicles will be required to undergo an emissions inspection every two years. Inspections can be accepted up to 90 days before the vehicle's compliance date.
January 2027
Starting January 1, 2027, fleets will be subjected to four tests per year.
What are the responsibilities of fleet owners?
1. Clean Truck Check: Identification and compliance of vehicles
The program is open to all diesel, alternative fuel, and non-gasoline buses and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 14,000. If you have trucks that are eligible for a CARB Clean Truck Check, contact All American Diesel & Fleet Services.
2. Subscribe to CARB Email Alerts
Subscribe to Clean Truck Check online updates to receive notifications such as when CARB releases their database and when compliance tests are required. By staying up-to-date, you can avoid missing important deadlines and get the latest information on program implementation.
3. Send Payment and Information
You will be asked to enter specific information when the CARB database is opened. Provide information on your fleet and individual vehicles. Also, provide the DMV registration number for the vehicle owner. These details should be organized and collected in advance. Be prepared to pay a fee per vehicle. You can pay via the database. The certificate will be sent to you.
4. Prepare for periodic compliance tests in 2025
Ensure that your emission systems are working properly and that you adhere to a test plan. If you do not have an OBD system, consider installing one. Plan maintenance for your equipment. Future Testing and Ongoing Testing Needs
In 2025, vehicles that are OBD-ready will be tested twice a month. This requirement will increase to four tests a year after three years. Motorhomes and farm trucks are only tested once per year in California.
Before a vehicle can be considered compliant, it must also meet certain other requirements.
- The vehicle is not subject to any enforcement actions.
- OBD is not affected by recalls or emissions.
- CARB is required to receive information on all vehicles and their owners.
- CARB requires that owners pay an annual fee.
- Owners are required to pass the CARB Compliance Test.
